Hunter Wetlands Solar
Latest News: The panels are installed!
The Hunter Wetlands Centre now has 90 solar panels installed on the roof of the Spoonbill Café veranda. This is expected to reduce their electricity costs by approximately $7000 per annum. Congratulations to all that have donated to the Hunter Wetlands Solar project, with $19,500 fund-raised and a further $19,000 of matched funding as part of the 2015 Newcastle Stronger Community Grants. This grant doubled the size of the solar panel array, allowed the investment in some priority energy efficiency retrofits and an electric vehicle charge station. Go #SolarDucks !

Individual/Community Sponsorship
BE PART OF SOMETHING BIGGER
The Hunter Wetlands Centre (HWC) is going solar and we are excited to invite you to be part of this forward-looking initiative!
As a community owned, not-for-profit local charity serving and caring for the Hunter, the HWC has achieved a lot of good over the last 30 years.
Now we want to show how much we care again by generating 100% renewable energy at the HWC to power our Centre!
In Stage 1 of the Hunter Wetlands SOLAR campaign we’re installing 48 solar panels on the roof of the Spoonbill Café veranda which will generate up to 20% of our daily power use as averaged over the year.
This will cut our annual power bills by at least $4,000 each year, which will enable us to spend more money on wetlands conservation and environmental education.
You can be part of that initiative! Join us in caring for our HWC and the environment:
BECOME A SPONSOR AND BUY ONE SOLAR PANEL FOR Hunter Wetlands SOLAR

HUNTER WETLANDS CENTRE
In partnership with community renewable energy group CLEANaS we aim to raise $20,000 so we can install the panels this July.
The panels will be installed by ACS Solar and will be high quality SunTech panels with new-generation, highly efficient microinverter systems so we can make as much power as possible. If we can raise enough additional funds we aim to install battery storage to increase how much solar power we use.
We’re also switching our energy utility so we only buy electricity generated from only renewable sources, which will also save us an estimated $1,000 each year on power bills.
So, with your support, we can save over $4,000 each year on power bills and reduce our carbon emissions from electricity to zero. We also intend to install a display panel in the HWC which will show the amount of electricity being produced by the solar panels and a list of community sponsors.
As a member-based organisation we need to respond to the needs and concerns of our community. Going solar and cutting our carbon emissions means we will steward our scarce funds wisely and demonstrate that a small local charity can do its fair share in protecting our climate.
Just as coastal freshwater wetlands around the world are under threat from rising sea levels, so our much loved freshwater and brackish wetlands risk being converted into a mangrove forest this century if dangerous climate change is allowed to happen.
By going solar we will be helping protect our own freshwater wetlands to make sure the amazing HWC remains a valued community owned wetlands asset in the Lower Hunter for many decades to come.
We’d love to work with you to achieve this on behalf of our community! Just as we have partnered over the decades with governments, industry and the community to build the HWC into what it is today, we seek your support to make this exciting project happen.
CLEANaS
The fundamental goal of CLEANaS is to increase the use of renewable energy in Australia. That‘s why we are very excited to team up with such an iconic organisation as the HWC to make more renewable energy happen here in Newcastle.
Over the first years of its existence, CLEANaS have developed a toolkit that can be used to develop community based renewable energy projects. CLEANaS are now carrying out feasibility studies for actual projects in the Lower Hunter.
The Hunter Wetlands SOLAR fundraising project to make the installation of a 12 kwh solar system at HWC possible, is entirely compatible with CLEANaS objectives. CLEANaS will work in partnership with HWC to encourage members of the community and businesses to donate to this great cause.
CLEANaS recognise that the Hunter Wetlands SOLAR project will reduce green gas emissions, thus contributing to action on climate change, and enhance both HWC and CLEANaS’ relationship with the community.
This connection with the community, business and individuals alike, will improve CLEANaS prospect of reaching its goal of increased renewable energy use by giving the organisation the experience of running a project, increased membership and better resources.
